Good Over Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones
If you're looking to shut the world off and focus on your music, good over ear noise cancelling headphones are essential. You can use them for your commute, travel or even at home.
We've analyzed all the options to help you make a choice. These are our top choices based upon the criteria that we and our testers appreciate the most:.
1. Comfort
The best over-ear noise cancelling headphones can comfortably fit over your head and stay in place as you move around. They should also have enough padding to seal the ear cups over your ears, ensuring that you are isolated from ambient noise. This is important when listening to podcasts, music or audiobooks on the go or working at home. The ear cup padding should be supple and soft to fit different head shapes and sizes, while the headband padding should be sufficient to ensure comfort during all day wear.
The best pair of headphones that block noise comes down to your particular needs and budget. There are longtime heavyweights in the market, such as Bose and Sony, but Apple has quickly carved out some market share with its luxurious AirPods Max. There are also budget-friendly options from monoprice and other brands that offer many of the features of higher-end models for only a fraction of the cost.
For example, the monoprice BT-600ANC offer active noise cancellation and ambient awareness modes, as well as touch controls, and high-quality audio codec support for your favorite audio apps. Their earcups are smaller than Bose's latest models, therefore they're an ideal fit for most people. They're also very inexpensive and are about the same cost as a decent pair of noise-canceling wired headphones.
The Bowers & Wilkins S2 will impress with its quality of construction and sound, if you're willing pay a little more. Few headphones combine elegance and subtlety like these. They feature die-cast aluminum arms, diamond-cut metal details, and a gorgeous design.
The noise-canceling capabilities of their models are a bit less robust than the top-rated Bose QC35 II and QC45 however, our Lab Assistant found them to be very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They were able to reduce the sound of an airplane engine, train tracks and other loud sounds, but not the screeching of brakes or the squealing of other passengers. The headphones did not have passive isolation which is a characteristic we look for when choosing the best headphones to block office chatter or other distracting background noises at home.
2. Sound

Noise cancelling headphones can drown out the din around you and help you focus in a noisy office or catch some shut-eye on a flight. The quality of the sound that comes through the headphones is crucial. You'll want to listen to podcasts and music with as clear and volume as is possible in a quiet space.
The ear cups and buds that protect the ear canals within the headphones also play a role in good isolation. It is essential in preventing outside noises from interfering with the audio experience. You can achieve this by wearing headphones that have active noise cancelation that have built-in microphones that actively create opposing sounds to block out ambient sounds. Earbuds which don't feature active noise cancellation are not as quiet however they provide good sound isolation due to their design and the tight fit you can achieve when they fit properly.
We test for a range of factors to find the best over ear headphones that cancel out noise, such as their ability to block low-frequency ambient noises like the sound of a train engine or the drone of an aircraft and high-frequency continuous noise like conversation or chatter. We also test the sound quality of headphones, which includes things like bass, midrange and treble clarity and whether or not they offer a natural distinction between the sounds of instruments and voices.
Our favorite is the Sony WH-1000XM5, which has excellent noise cancellation that effectively blocks out the roar of a plane or the rumble of a subway car without suffocating the sound of your music or movie. They provide great passive isolation and come with numerous useful features like the capability for your media to automatically paused when you take it from your ears.
Bose's QuietComfort headphones have a similar sound quality, with crisp highs and mids. These headphones are slightly more expensive than XM4s, but not by a lot. These headphones do have some minor issues, however. They don't allow you to alter the amount of active noise cancellation. It's either off or on. There's no transparency mode to let in some outside sounds, and there's no on-ear sensor to prompt your phone to switch over to the headset when you take them off.
3. Noise Cancellation
Anyone who uses headphones for extended periods will benefit from noise cancelling. This is true regardless of whether they're using them for work, to listen to podcasts or read, or listen to music or films on a train or plane. The best noise cancelling headphones have to do more than just block ambient noise. In our tests we analyzed the noise cancellation capabilities of headphones by using audio spectrum analysis and also subjective listening tests.
In addition to looking for premium headphones with a comfortable design and excellent audio quality, we also considered how well headphones can block out higher-frequency continuous sounds, such as restaurant chatter, and short-duration incidental noises, like the whir of the computer fan or a neighboring lawnmower. We also assessed the degree of isolation offered by headphones, and if they could be effective in blocking out the sound by covering your ears with ears.
Over-ear models typically offer better noise cancellation than earbuds because they're designed to fully protect your ears and shield your ears from outside noise. We looked at the ANC performance of a variety of headphones that are over-ear, including models from Bose, Sony and more to see which pair best eliminated external distractions while still delivering high-quality audio.
In our review, we found the Sony WH1000XM5 headphones to provide excellent audio quality, comfort and superior noise cancellation. The headphones also support high-resolution audio codec LDAC which provides an immersive listening experience. They also come with a physical button that allows you to toggle between three levels of ANC on any device.
The Monoprice's BT-600ANC is a light, affordable pair of over-ear headphones that offer a high level of noise reduction and audio quality for the price. They're not the most comfortable headphones to wear for extended period of time, however they are capable of separating your ears from the surrounding noise and allowing you to get lost in your favorite music.
If you're looking for a fantastic set of noise-canceling headsets at an even more affordable price look into the Sony WH-XB910N. The "XB" in their name stands for extra bass, and while they meet their promise, we would still recommend Bose's ANC performance and overall feel of the WH-1000XM5 headphones.
4. Battery Life
If you're planning to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, you'll want to be sure they'll last. Good over ear noise cancelling headphones come with a battery lifespan that will last through the duration of a long flight or week of daily commutes. We test all wireless headphones for battery life.
In our tests we've discovered that the best ANC headphones offer at least 30 hours of battery life. This is more than enough to get you through a long, international flight, or a full week of meetings and commutes. In fact, a lot of models will exceed the threshold with some models even achieving 60 hours of active noise cancellation.
Although there are headphones that can go longer, it is important to keep in mind that the quality of your sound will diminish as the battery of your headphone decreases. This will be noticeable when the sound becomes muffled, and the bass is less punchy. However, the majority of people don't be aware of this, especially if you are only listening to quiet music or podcasts.
The new Sennheiser Momentum 4 over-ear headphones focus on style and comfort while delivering the core features high-end shoppers look for in their audio headsets. These include improved ANC, a useful control app, and superb audio quality. They are less expensive than the price of Sony's flagship models which means you can enjoy great ANC without the hefty price tag.
Another pair of great headphones to look at is the Monoprice BT600ANC over-ears. They're affordable and provide excellent performance. They're lightweight and comfortable with a well-designed headband comfortable on the ears. Touch controls as well as AAC and aptX support are included for high-quality audio. They are compatible with iOS and Android devices. They're not as great as the Bose QuietComfort 45 but they're an excellent choice for anyone on a budget.
Noise-canceling headphones are a great purchase for frequent travelers, office employees and anyone who wants a quiet and peaceful environment to listen to their audiobook or podcast. While best over ear noise cancelling headphones may be more expensive than regular headphones, they are well worth the cost when you're constantly on the go.
